Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s pending cases, including his appeal involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), remain unchanged despite the conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said the status of the pending cases remained the same for now.
He stressed that each case must be handled separately based on the specific issues and scope involved in the investigation or proceedings.
“As far as we are concerned, the pending cases remain the same. Status quo remains,” he told reporters during the MACC Shooting Programme with the Media at Kajang Prison College on Saturday.
Abd Halim was responding to questions on whether the conditional pardon granted to Najib would have any impact on the 1MDB case and related proceedings.
He said investigations and cases were dealt with according to the specific matters being examined or complaints received, adding that one case could not simply be linked to another.
Najib was granted a conditional pardon by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim on Friday, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to a RM50 million fine and other conditions.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya. The order states that the conditional pardon would be revoked if Najib failed to comply with the imposed conditions, requiring him to return to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
Najib, 73, was previously sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million after being convicted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in 2020 on seven charges linked to RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd. His sentence and fine were later reduced following an earlier royal pardon.
