A Threads user has shared her frustration after her roommate allegedly moved out without warning, leaving behind a filthy, foul-smelling room and unpaid rent.
According to the user, she was forced to cover her roommate’s share of the rent after the latter allegedly disappeared without settling her payments.
She claimed she had already been helping to pay RM350 a month for her roommate during a six-month period when the woman was unemployed.
“This month, she suddenly disappeared and ran away. Her room was already a mess, with urine in bottles and plastic bags. It smelled strongly of urine,” she wrote in a Threads post.
The user said she only discovered the condition of the room after deciding to inspect it, adding that there was also a strong smell of faeces.
She explained that she had to cover the outstanding rent because she was the person dealing directly with the landlord and did not want to risk damaging her relationship with the property owner.
“I had to pay her unpaid share because I’m the one dealing with the landlord. I don’t want my name to be tarnished or to have problems with the landlord,” she said.
The roommate also allegedly left her with about RM2,000 in debt.
The Threads user shared several photos purportedly showing the condition of the house, including bottles and plastic bags containing urine hanging from the room’s window and walls.
“I want my RM2,000 back. If you want to run away, at least clean your room like when you first moved in. It was clean then,” she wrote.
She claimed the problem had been ongoing since 2023, saying she had repeatedly tolerated late and incomplete rental payments from her roommate.
“I’ve been patient since 2023. I tolerated it because you always paid late and never paid enough, but I still gave you some leeway. Yet you just ran away like that,” she said.
Despite her frustration, the user said she had chosen not to reveal her roommate’s identity or face, even though she claimed to have helped her financially and covered up her problems on several occasions.
The post prompted other social media users to share their own experiences with untidy roommates.
One user claimed she also lived with someone who rarely showered before going to class and relied on perfume to mask the smell.
Another recalled living with a group of messy housemates, alleging that one woman would leave food scraps in the sink, fail to wash her own dishes and leave rubbish containing maggots untouched.
The user said the experiences showed how difficult it could be to live with roommates who did not maintain basic cleanliness.
