The Education Ministry plans to strengthen Korean language proficiency among Malaysian students through its international language subject initiative.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek said students in the country had shown strong potential in learning Korean, but their language skills needed to be further developed.
“Every year, the Education Ministry sends students to Korea, while Korean teachers also come to Malaysia to teach our students.
“They communicate in English and use translations, so we see a need to improve their Korean language skills,” she said in her speech at a dinner marking the 100th anniversary of Kuala Lumpur Technical Secondary School (TIKL) here today.
Also present were Education Ministry Technical and Vocational Education and Training Division director Zulkernain Fauzi, TIKL principal Ahmad Nazryshah Mohamed Khalid and Alumtek Kuala Lumpur president Norhisham Soin.
TIKL is among nine technical secondary schools nationwide that have been rebranded as Technical Fully Residential Schools (SBP-T).
The other eight schools are SMT Alor Setar in Kedah, SMT Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra in Penang, SMT Tuanku Jaa’far in Negri Sembilan, SMT Bukit Piatu in Melaka, SMT Kuala Terengganu in Terengganu, SMT Kuantan in Pahang, SMT Johor Bahru in Johor and SMT Sejingkat in Sarawak.
During the event, Fadhlina also announced a RM150,000 contribution to TIKL to support maintenance work at the school.
She also launched a coffee-table book documenting TIKL’s 100-year history, produced to commemorate the school’s centenary.
The dinner was attended by more than 1,000 alumni from different generations.
