PAS election director Sanusi Nor has mocked DAP’s decision for only its secretary-general Anthony Loke to resign from the Cabinet following former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s conditional pardon.
Describing the move as “firecracker politics”, the Kedah Menteri Besar questioned why DAP did not take broader action, pointing to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming’s previous statement that he would resign under certain circumstances.
“Nga said the same thing before. He didn’t resign either. They act as if they’re going to take action, but nothing gets done. It’s firecracker politics. Lots of noise, then silence,” Sanusi told FMT.
He also accused DAP of repeatedly changing its position on whether its leaders should leave the government.
“DAP plays flip-flop politics. Next, they’ll find an excuse not to resign. Before this, they said they wanted to leave the government. Then they found an excuse not to,” he said.
Loke announced his decision to offer his resignation as Transport Minister on Saturday after a three-hour meeting of DAP’s Central Executive Committee. He said the move was the party’s response to Najib’s conditional pardon, while other DAP ministers and deputy ministers would remain in the Cabinet to maintain political stability.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon on Friday, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to a RM50 million fine and other conditions. The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said Najib must comply with all conditions or risk having the pardon revoked.
Najib, 73, has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since August 2022 after the Federal Court upheld his conviction for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving RM42 million belonging to SRC International.
His original 12-year prison sentence was reduced to six years by the Federal Territories Pardons Board in February 2024, while his RM210 million fine was reduced to RM50 million.
