The next general election is expected to be a closely contested race, with PAS setting its sights on expanding its influence into states including Perak, Selangor, Pahang and Penang.
PAS Central Election Director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has described the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16) as the “mother of all elections” since 1955, while highlighting the party’s growth from having just one Member of Parliament to 43 MPs today.
The Kedah Menteri Besar said the party’s growth showed that PAS was no longer a small political party, pointing to its nationwide machinery and organisational strength.
Sanusi made the remarks while speaking at the PAS Parit Buntar division’s dinner and election machinery launch at Dewan Tuan Guru Ahmad Tuan Hussin in Titi Serong.
He said one of PAS’ strengths was the willingness of its members to follow party decisions and the leadership’s directives, including putting aside personal interests in favour of collective decisions.
According to Sanusi, the party’s organisational strength was not limited to election periods, but was also reflected in its ongoing education, welfare and community activities.
He also said PAS did not regard government projects as a source of benefit for the party or its leaders, adding that party leaders had been reminded not to lobby for projects or use their positions as elected representatives to secure them.
Sanusi said the same approach had been practised in Kedah during his six years as Menteri Besar.
He subsequently urged Perak voters to give PAS an opportunity to govern the state at the next election.
Sanusi also said PAS was targeting Selangor and Pahang, while seeking to retain control of Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis, and aiming to win seats in Penang.
