A former 15th General Election (GE15) candidate has been arrested after allegedly pushing a 79-year-old woman into a drain in OUG, Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur, last Friday.
Brickfields district police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said police received a report concerning the incident at around 12.37pm on the same day.
Preliminary investigations found that the victim, a former Selangor hockey player from the 1960s, had gone to a shop before she was allegedly followed by the suspect.
“At around 10.30am, when the victim left the premises, the suspect, who was outside the shop, suddenly allegedly pushed her, causing her to fall into a drain,” Hoo said in a statement.
The woman suffered injuries to the back of her head, left hand and back. She was taken to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) for treatment.
Police also obtained CCTV footage which allegedly showed the suspect outside the shop before the incident.
The suspect, aged 59, is a retiree who previously contested as an Independent candidate in GE15.
Police arrested him in OUG and seized clothing believed to have been worn during the alleged incident.
However, Hoo said the suspect denied pushing the woman when questioned and did not cooperate with police regarding the alleged motive.
The victim told police that she did not know the suspect and had no disputes with anyone.
The suspect was remanded for one day before the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates’ Court ordered that he undergo psychiatric treatment, with the defence instructed to make the necessary arrangements.
The victim remained in the emergency ward for four days before being discharged on September 21.
Police are still awaiting a complete medical report from PPUM, including the doctor’s statement, before referring the investigation papers to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further instructions.
The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
