A photograph showing three healthcare workers standing alongside former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has touched Malaysians online, with many describing the image as a moving reflection of the country’s diversity.
The photograph was highlighted by health advocacy platform Public Health Malaysia, which said the three healthcare workers were Malay, Chinese and Indian and were accompanying Dr Mahathir while he received care and monitoring at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
Former Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also shared the photograph on Facebook, praising the healthcare workers for remaining by Dr Mahathir’s side during a difficult period.
“As Malaysians worry and pray for Tun Mahathir’s health, three dedicated healthcare workers from IJN, one Malay, one Chinese and one Indian stand by his side,” he wrote.
“They are a powerful reflection of Malaysia’s diversity, united in caring for him. Thank you to our frontline workers.”
Public Health Malaysia similarly described the image as a symbolic reminder of Malaysians coming together, saying the workers’ different backgrounds reflected the spirit of unity while caring for a patient.
The photograph has since been widely shared on Facebook, receiving more than 121,000 reactions and numerous messages praising the healthcare workers for their dedication.
The image emerged as Dr Mahathir mourns the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, who died at IJN on September 28 at the age of 100.
Siti Hasmah, a doctor and prominent public health advocate herself, had been married to Dr Mahathir for more than seven decades.
Public Health Malaysia had earlier shared another tribute showing Dr Mahathir grieving following his wife’s death, highlighting his experience not as a former prime minister but as a husband mourning the loss of his lifelong partner.
The latest photograph has prompted an emotional response from Malaysians, with many saying it captured both the grief surrounding Siti Hasmah’s passing and the support surrounding Dr Mahathir.
One commenter said the loss felt deeply personal, writing that it was “like losing our own mother”.
Another described Siti Hasmah as a mother figure whom Malaysians had known from afar, while others praised the healthcare workers for their care and compassion.
One commenter also noted that a member of the medical team appeared emotional, while another summed up the reaction to the photograph by saying: “This is the spirit of Malaysians. Regardless of race, we are here for one another.”
For Dr Noor Hisham, the photograph serves as a reminder that Malaysians can come together across racial backgrounds when caring for someone in need.
Amid Dr Mahathir’s mourning, the image has become a quiet snapshot of the people standing beside him during one of the most difficult periods of his life.
