Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded young Malaysians, particularly Gen Z, that academic qualifications alone do not guarantee integrity or prevent someone from engaging in corruption.
He said university students should not only pursue academic excellence but also develop strong character and values to ensure they do not abuse their authority when they enter positions of power in the future.
Anwar pointed to individuals linked to the 1MDB scandal and controversies involving Felda and Tabung Haji, saying many of those involved were highly educated.
“Generally, those involved are not uneducated. Almost all have degrees, and some have master’s degrees and PhDs.
“A good education, therefore, does not make one virtuous,” he said at the 2026 National Student Figure Awards (ATSN) ceremony here.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir and his deputy, Adam Adli Abdul Halim, were also present at the event.
Anwar said values such as standing up for the rights of others and rejecting corruption should be instilled from a young age.
He also urged university students to develop a deeper understanding of social issues, including poverty, ethnic disparities and the challenges faced by lower-income communities.
He said these issues should form part of students’ understanding as they prepare to take on greater responsibilities in society.
