One Of 55 Missing Malaysians Found Safe After Nepal Glacial Floods, Returns Home After 37 Days

Date:

One of the 55 Malaysians reported missing following the glacial floods in Nepal on Aug 26 has been found safe and returned to Malaysia.

The Malaysian, who had been travelling alone, turned up at the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu on Thursday, according to Wisma Putra.

Malaysia Solidarity: Families in Hope (Masfih), a group representing the families of the 55 missing Malaysians, said the man had been in Nagthali on Aug 25, a day before the floods struck.

He was stranded in the area for some time after losing communication access and as infrastructure was damaged by the disaster.

Despite the disruption, he eventually managed to make his way to the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu.

“He returned to Malaysia this morning and is now with his family,” Masfih said in a statement.

The group described the development, 37 days after the disaster, as an encouraging relief for the families still waiting for news of their loved ones.

“After 37 days of uncertainty, a family finally welcomed back their loved one. The joy of this family is felt by all the other families still waiting,” it said.

Masfih said the case showed that it remained possible for those who had lost communication and become stranded for an extended period to eventually be located and reunited with their families.

“If one can be safe, stranded and out of communication for a long period before finally being found and reunited with their family, we do not want to lose hope for the 54 Malaysians who are still uncontactable,” the group said.
