A 14-year-old girl in India has allegedly been repeatedly raped and abused by her parents after they discovered she had been communicating with a male friend.
The alleged abuse took place between Sept 20 and 29 in Anjar, Gujarat, where the teenager lived with her parents and three siblings. The family is believed to have been living in Gujarat for about six years.
According to police, the girl contacted an emergency helpline after allegedly being assaulted and confined by her parents over her friendship with the boy.
A police spokesperson said the teenager’s mother informed her father after discovering that she had been communicating with the boy over the phone.
The father allegedly became angry, assaulted the girl and locked her up, while also withholding food and water from her for several hours.
Police said the father allegedly sexually assaulted the teenager on multiple occasions, while her mother allegedly took photographs of the girl while she was naked.
The teenager has since been placed under the care of the authorities.
Police have opened an investigation against the couple under India’s Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with other relevant provisions of the law.
