Pedestrian Suffers Broken Leg After Being Hit By Motorcycle In Penang

Date:

A 32-year-old pedestrian suffered a broken leg after being struck by a motorcycle while crossing Lebuh Chulia in George Town, Penang, on October 5.

The accident occurred at around 9.10pm when the local man was crossing the road and was hit by a motorcycle ridden by a 22-year-old man.

Northeast District Deputy Police Chief Superintendent Lee Swee Sake said the motorcyclist was travelling from his workplace along Lebuh Chulia towards Jalan Patani when the collision occurred.

The motorcyclist sustained minor injuries, while the pedestrian suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg, and remains under hospital treatment.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the accident was believed to have been caused by the motorcyclist’s negligence in handling his vehicle, resulting in the collision with the pedestrian.

Both men were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Lee said police became aware of a 46-second video showing the incident circulating on WhatsApp on Thursday. Investigations subsequently established that the accident had occurred on October 5.

The video, which also went viral on social media, showed the pedestrian being thrown into the air after being struck by the motorcycle while crossing the road.

Members of the public were seen coming to the pedestrian’s aid before he was taken to hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers careless and inconsiderate driving.
