A single mother has been fined RM1,000 after admitting to filing a false police report claiming she was a snatch theft victim to avoid paying the fee for replacing her lost MyKad.
Keranjeet Kaur Shivinder, a mother of two, pleaded guilty at the Batu Pahat Magistrate’s Court to lodging a false report under Section 182 of the Penal Code.
According to the New Straits Times, Keranjeet lodged the report at the Cyberjaya police station in Sepang, Selangor, at 12.37pm on September 15.
She claimed that two men on a motorcycle had snatched her handbag in Kampung Jorak Elahi, Bukit Pasir, at 11.20pm on September 12.
The report stated that she had lost her identity card, bank cards, house keys and RM210 in cash in the alleged incident.
However, police investigations found that the reported snatch theft had not occurred.
When questioned by police on September 18, Keranjeet admitted to fabricating the incident, explaining that she wanted to obtain a replacement MyKad without paying the required fee after misplacing her original card.
Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno fined her RM1,000, with five months’ imprisonment in default of payment. She paid the fine.
Under Section 182 of the Penal Code, anyone convicted of providing false information to a public servant can face up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
