Abang Johari Confirms New Faces For GPS As Some Sarawak Assemblymen Step Down

Date:

Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will field a mix of new faces and experienced candidates in the upcoming Sarawak state election, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced.

The GPS chairman said the coalition’s candidate list would be finalised at a special meeting before being announced in the near future.

Abang Johari also revealed that some incumbent assemblymen had chosen not to continue serving in the next term.

“What I can say here is that we will have a combination of experienced candidates and new faces.

“Of course, there will be new faces. Some incumbents are not being dropped but have chosen to step aside,” he told a press conference today.

He was speaking after announcing the dissolution of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) at Dewan Perdana, Kompleks Satria Pertiwi.

The dissolution will take effect on Oct 26 to pave the way for Sarawak’s 13th state election, following the consent of Sarawak Governor Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

GPS comprises four component parties: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

In the previous Sarawak state election on Dec 18, 2021, GPS won 76 of the 82 seats contested.
