A 23-year-old Chinese national pursuing a Master’s degree at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has pleaded guilty to filming his female housemate while she showered and undressed on multiple occasions.
According to Shin Min Daily News, Zeng Ze Qun committed the offence at a private rental property in western Singapore.
Court documents stated that on Aug 18, Zeng was eating dinner in the kitchen when he noticed his housemate taking a shower at about 9.25pm.
He reportedly placed his half-eaten meal in the refrigerator before quietly entering the toilet and reaching his arm through a window to record the woman with his phone.
When the housemate realised she was being filmed, she screamed in fear, got dressed and left the bathroom.
Zeng then fled to a nearby shopping mall, where he deleted the videos in an apparent attempt to cover his tracks. However, police arrested him when he returned to the residence.
Investigations revealed that Zeng had allegedly filmed the woman 10 times between June 20 and Aug 18 while she was showering or undressing in her bedroom.
During court proceedings, Zeng testified that filming his housemate made him feel excited. He said he used the act as a way to relieve academic pressure and anxiety.
Police were unable to recover the videos from his phone because he would delete recordings about a week after making them.
The prosecution sought a jail sentence of at least six and a half months.
However, Zeng’s defence lawyer requested a postponement of sentencing, citing his client’s status as a final-semester student in NUS’ Master of Science programme.
Zeng pleaded guilty on Oct 20 and is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec 16.
