Malaysia’s Northeast Monsoon To Begin Oct 27, Bringing Flood Risks And Extreme Heat

Date:

Malaysia’s 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon is expected to begin on Oct 27, with three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain forecast between November and January, raising the risk of floods in low-lying areas and riverine communities.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the monsoon would continue until March next year, bringing persistent northeast winds.

These strong winds could also cause rough seas and higher sea levels, particularly over the South China Sea.

However, rainfall is expected to ease during the final phase of the monsoon, from January to March, especially in the northern peninsula and Sabah.

Hisham warned that the drier conditions could bring hotter weather and more extreme heatwaves due to the influence of the currently occurring very strong Super El Niño phenomenon.

“This condition will result in hot and dry weather and could lead to more extreme heatwaves due to the influence of the very strong (Super) El Niño phenomenon currently occurring,” he said in a statement today.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and regularly check weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia throughout the monsoon period.

Weather updates are available through MetMalaysia’s official website, the myCuaca mobile application and its social media platforms. The public can also call the department’s hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
