Selangor PAS Youth has urged the state government to immediately investigate the entry of thousands of live pigs through Port Klang every month since July, amid concerns over compliance with the Sultan of Selangor’s decree.
Its deputy chief, Muhammad Faizzuddin Mohd Zai, said the state government must provide an immediate explanation to ease public concerns and ensure that Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s decree is respected.
He said the Sultan had previously decreed that only imported pork, rather than live pigs, could be brought in to meet demand among the non-Muslim community in Selangor.
“Reports of live pigs entering on a large scale raise serious questions about whether this activity goes against the Sultan of Selangor’s decree,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
Sinar Harian reported last Tuesday that Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari had said the state government would review the issue of live pigs allegedly entering from other states through Selangor before deciding on further action.
Muhammad Faizzuddin also raised concerns over the potential impact on cleanliness, public health and the environment, particularly in areas surrounding the port.
He claimed that waste from cleaning operations and unpleasant odours during the transfer of animals from ships to lorries had disrupted the peace of the local fishing community.
He warned that the uncontrolled discharge of sewage and waste into the sea could affect water quality, marine ecosystems and fishermen’s catches.
He called on local authorities and relevant agencies to launch an immediate investigation and tighten monitoring to ensure residents and fishermen were not adversely affected.
“The state government must take firm action, and the Selangor Menteri Besar must not take this issue lightly,” he added.
