Abang Johari: Japanese Investor Eye Sarawak For Satellite And AI Technology Projects

Date:

Sarawak’s free education policy has emerged as a key factor attracting Japanese investors interested in exploring opportunities in satellite technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven industries in the state.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the investor had personally highlighted Sarawak’s potential to become one of the region’s leading destinations for emerging economic sectors.

He said the investor also viewed Sarawak as a suitable location for satellite installation and the development of AI and data technologies that could help address global economic challenges.

“I asked him how he came to know about Sarawak, and he explained that they had discussed the suitability of Sarawak as a location for satellite installation, as well as developing technological and data intelligence capabilities to find solutions for the global economy.

“There are many other locations they could choose, but they chose Sarawak. Why? Because of our free education policy. According to him, other countries do not provide free education like Sarawak does,” he said.

Abang Johari was speaking at the 35th anniversary celebration of Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) in Kuching last night.

He said the future economy would depend heavily on human capital, making it essential for Sarawak to equip its local workforce with skills that meet the demands of emerging industries.

He added that sectors involving satellite technology, cloud computing and AI would require highly skilled workers and stronger local technological capabilities.

“The new economy will depend on our people. We believe Sarawak has the human capital that can be trained to meet the needs of the new economy,” he said.

However, Abang Johari clarified that the proposed technology-related investment had yet to be finalised, despite growing international interest in Sarawak’s potential.
