A 27-year-old lorry driver lost his right leg while another man was injured after a five-tonne truck carrying chickens overturned in a solo accident along Jalan Sibu-Bintulu early this morning.
The crash occurred at about 3.29am near the Simpang Jalan Kemena junction, when the Nissan lorry was believed to have hit a road barrier before overturning onto the roadside.
The impact threw both men out of the vehicle, leaving the driver with severe injuries, including a severed right leg and a fractured left leg.
His 29-year-old passenger also sustained an injury to his right leg. Both victims were reportedly still conscious when firefighters arrived.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre, a team from the Selangau Fire and Rescue Station reached the scene at 4.07am to carry out rescue operations.
Firefighters used a Telescopic Ram to free one of the victims who was trapped beneath the overturned lorry.
The trapped victim was successfully extricated before both men were handed over to Health Ministry personnel for further treatment.
The operation involved six firefighters and one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicle. It ended at 4.51am after the scene was declared safe and under control.
