Police Told To Probe Claims Negri MB Was Forced To Sign Ruler’s Removal Document

Date:

Police have been directed to carry out further investigations into claims that Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim was pressured into signing a proclamation seeking the removal of the state’s ruler.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (A-GC) said the instruction was issued after it reviewed the investigation paper submitted by police on Oct 30.

In a statement, the A-GC said additional action was required from the investigating officer before a decision could be made on the case.

“As such, the investigation paper will be returned to police today for further action,” it said.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which concerns criminal intimidation and carries a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

The A-GC also clarified that there had been no delay on its part in reviewing the investigation paper, following claims raised over the handling of the case.

The controversy emerged in September when Ismail alleged that he had been pressured into signing the Instrument of Proclamation concerning the removal of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

The latest directive means police must complete the additional investigative steps before the A-GC decides on the next course of action.
