A man was left with a fractured right thumb after a car suddenly reversed into him at a petrol station in Tawau, Sabah, throwing him underneath the vehicle.
The incident happened at around 5.50pm on Saturday (Oct 31) at a petrol station along Jalan Kuhara.
CCTV footage circulating on social media showed a Perodua Viva reversing before suddenly accelerating backwards and crashing into a 59-year-old local man who was washing his hands near the tyre inflation station.
The vehicle also damaged the petrol station’s tyre inflation facility and surrounding concrete structures.
The impact sent the victim underneath the car, which then drove away from the scene.
Tawau district police chief ACP Rosdi Md Juosoh said preliminary investigations found that the driver had stopped at the petrol station to inflate his car tyres.
However, the driver discovered that the air hose could not reach the vehicle’s front-left tyre and decided to reposition the car.
While attempting to reverse, the driver allegedly pressed the accelerator instead, causing the vehicle to surge backwards and hit the victim.
The injured man suffered a fractured right thumb and was taken to hospital for treatment. The driver, meanwhile, escaped without any apparent injuries.
Police are investigating the case under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and are seeking additional witnesses to help establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, a social media user shared a photograph of the victim lying in a hospital bed and reassured the public that he was out of danger and recovering in hospital.
