Three siblings were forced to seek help from the Fire and Rescue Department to evacuate their bedridden 60-year-old mother after floodwaters surged into their home in Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir, Sungai Buloh, earlier today (4th Nov).
Nur Nazihah Asyiqin Mohd Said, 27, said the water rose much faster than expected, leaving the family with little time to save their belongings or move their mother to safety.
Although their home is in a flood-prone area, she said the water usually rises gradually.
She recalled that rain began at about 10pm yesterday as she was returning from work. She was initially not worried, but became concerned when the downpour grew heavier around midnight.
“At 2am, my younger sibling woke me up and said water was rushing into the house.
“We initially thought it would not rise too high, but by 3am, it had reached my waist.
“As I was worried about my mother, who is bedridden following a stroke, I asked my brother to seek help to get her to safety,” she said when contacted today.
The Fire and Rescue Department team arrived at about 3.30am and evacuated the family to the Sinar Pagi temporary relief centre.
Nur Nazihah Asyiqin said she had lived in the house with her mother and two brothers for 25 years, and flooding was not an unfamiliar experience.
Their home was also inundated up to waist level around April last year, resulting in damage to many of their belongings.
However, the family managed to salvage only a few items this time because the water rose too quickly. They also had no time to retrieve their mother’s medication.
Although the floodwaters around their home have since receded, the family has decided to remain at the relief centre over fears that the water could rise again if more rain falls.
She said she had been informed that the Social Welfare Department would assist the family in obtaining medication for her mother.
Nur Nazihah Asyiqin briefly returned home to collect some clothes but was unable to clean the house as the family needed to focus on caring for her mother.
“What worries me most is the possibility of another flood, as I understand it may rain again this afternoon.
“Although my mother seems uncomfortable at the relief centre, we have no choice. Her safety is more important,” she said.
