A plumber was sentenced to 24 years in jail and six strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to raping his 15-year-old girlfriend last month.
Judge Mohd Khairi Haron handed down the punishment on 47-year-old Azman Jamian after considering his plea, mitigation, and the prosecution’s arguments.
Azman faced three charges under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code. The court imposed eight years’ imprisonment and two strokes of the cane for each charge.
However, the judge ordered the prison terms to run concurrently, except for the whipping, meaning the accused will serve eight years in jail with six strokes of the cane.
According to the charges, the incidents took place at Azman’s home in the district at about 8:30 am and 12:30 pm on September 20, and again on September 24.
The offence under Section 376(1) carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping.
Case facts revealed the victim’s mother lodged a police report after discovering her daughter had been raped by the accused. Investigations showed the girl had skipped school and gone to Azman’s home, where the acts took place.
The first incident occurred on September 20, and the victim was later taken to Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital (HPSF) for medical examination. Azman was arrested at 7:22 pm on September 24.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Diyana Najihah Muhamed Fauzi led the prosecution, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
