A massive crowd took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur today, demanding justice for Palestinians and the release of Malaysians detained by Israeli forces following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. The protest began with roughly 200 people outside the LINC shopping mall and grew to nearly 3,000 as participants marched to the United States embassy by late afternoon.
Chants and Solidarity Fill the Streets
Chants of “Free, Free Palestine!” resonated along Jalan Tun Razak, drawing attention from motorists, many of whom honked in support. The rally was prompted by the flotilla incident on 1 October, when ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza were intercepted by Israeli forces. Among those detained were 23 Malaysians, confirmed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Placards and Protest Messages
Speakers condemned Israel’s blockade of Gaza, calling it a deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid. Protesters waved placards with messages like “Break The Siege” and “Release The Volunteers.” Despite moments of tension—some protesters set fire to the US flag in protest against its support for Israel—the rally remained largely peaceful, with riot police and medical personnel on standby.
Multi-Generational Participation
The demonstration was multi-generational, with men, women, and children marching together, waving Palestinian flags. Public figures, including rapper and PKR division chief Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman, also known as Altimet, joined the protest.
A Call for Action and Solidarity
Many participants expressed that the rally was about more than politics. “We cannot be silent while our brothers and sisters suffer,” said one attendee, her voice trembling. As the march reached the embassy gates, the chants intensified, sending a strong message of solidarity with Gaza and a demand for the immediate release of detained Malaysians.
