A 27-year-old Polish woman has tragically died in Bali after following an extreme fruit-only diet, known as fruitarianism, which led to severe malnutrition, yellowing nails, and decaying teeth. At the time of her death, her weight had dropped to just 22 kilograms.
According to The Sun, Karolina Krzyzak, born in Warsaw, Poland, had long adhered to fruitarianism. In December last year, she traveled to Bali to meet like-minded individuals but passed away in her hotel room due to malnutrition.
Hotel staff reported that Karolina requested only fruit as her meals upon arrival. While the resort was accustomed to catering to health-conscious and vegetarian guests, her frail and weak appearance alarmed staff. On one night, she was so weak she could not walk unaided and had to be assisted back to her room by hotel personnel.
Despite staff offering medical help, Karolina refused. Three days after her arrival, friends grew concerned when they could not reach her, and hotel staff discovered she had passed away alone in her room.
Friends revealed that Karolina had long suffered from osteoporosis and low albumin levels. She had struggled with body image issues and anorexia since her teens. After moving to the UK for university, she became interested in yoga and vegetarianism, eventually adopting a fruit-only diet. Social media photos showed her increasingly frail appearance, and despite repeated efforts by her parents and friends to seek treatment, she refused help.
Karolina’s case highlights the dangers of extreme diets. She is not alone in her struggles: in the UK, around 1.25 million people suffer from eating disorders, approximately 75% of whom are female.
