16-Year-Old Honor Student Stabs Mother to Death After Under Years of Pressure

Date:

In a case that shocked the community, 16-year-old Esmie Tseng from Overland Park, Kansas, was sentenced in an adult court after stabbing her mother to death.

Esmie, a gifted honor student and accomplished classical pianist, had consistently excelled academically and athletically. She also maintained an online blog, where she detailed her struggles to meet the high expectations of her Chinese immigrant parents. Her final entry, written just over a week before the tragic incident, described her attempt to make her mother an anklet as a gesture to please her. “It made me feel so childish, but I suppose that’s really what all parents want,” she wrote.

On August 19, 2005, Esmie murdered her 55-year-old mother, Shu Yi Zhang, in their home. She was arrested the same day. The case stunned neighbors and friends, including local father Jacob Horwitz, whose children had attended summer camp with Esmie. “My kids couldn’t believe it was the same sweet girl they knew,” he said.

After reading Esmie’s blog, which she had maintained for three years, Jacob discovered detailed accounts of harsh discipline and impossible standards. Entries described being punished for scoring 96% on exams, standing in a corner naked, and threats to sell her piano if she didn’t win competitions. “It was a cry for help,” Jacob remarked.

Despite the circumstances, Johnson County District Attorney Paul Morrison pushed to try Esmie as an adult, arguing the severity of the crime could not be overlooked. “Hacking somebody to death with a butcher knife is about as serious as it gets,” Morrison said. “Even though she was cruelly treated, it does not excuse this level of violence.”

On March 6, 2006, a month before her 17th birthday, Esmie pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in adult court and was sentenced to a minimum of eight years at the Topeka Correctional Facility, making her the youngest female inmate there. Reports suggested recreational drug use may have been a factor, though toxicology tests did not confirm this.
