KL Police Say ‘Enough Is Enough’ – Over 16,000 Summonses Issued In Just One Week!

Date:

Nearly 17,000 summonses have been issued to motorists and pedestrians across the capital city since the launch of Operation Patuh Undang-Undang (OP PUU) on October 1.

According to Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus, car drivers made up the majority of offenders, receiving 13,365 summonses, followed by motorcyclists with 2,813 summonses.

Fadil said the enforcement phase began after an awareness and advisory period was carried out from September 6 to 30, during which the public was reminded to comply with traffic laws before strict action commenced last Wednesday.

“The public must realize and change their selfish attitude on the road by obeying traffic laws. After the reminder period, there will no longer be any tolerance for those who continue to break the rules,” he said in a statement.

He added that the goal of the operation is to instill a culture of law-abiding road users among Kuala Lumpur residents.

OP PUU was initially conducted in high-traffic areas such as Pavilion, KLCC, Lot 10, Sogo, and Jalan Sultan Ismail before being expanded to other parts of the city.

Apart from car drivers and motorcyclists, 200 summonses were issued to van and pickup drivers, 141 to lorry drivers, 6 to bus drivers, 62 to taxi drivers, and 381 to pedestrians.

The most common offence was obstructing traffic, accounting for 11,720 summonses, followed by disobeying traffic lights (2,036), driving without a valid or expired license (702), other offences (568), driving without or with an expired road tax (489), and jaywalking or failing to use pedestrian crossings (381).

Other recorded offences included unclear or misleading number plates (374), disregarding traffic rules (374), failing to stop at red lights (148), not wearing or improperly wearing helmets (135), vehicle modifications (80), crossing the white line (75), using mobile phones while driving (70), not wearing seat belts (93), stopping in yellow boxes (95), and cutting queues or crossing double lines (2).
