Akmal Fires Back at Nga Kor Ming Over Gala Dinner Drinks: “You and Tiong Should Resign!”

Date:

Following Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming’s defense of alcoholic beverages being served at a Tourism Malaysia-linked Global Gala Dinner, UMNO Youth Chief, YB Datuk Dr. Akmal Saleh, has publicly criticized the minister, insisting the matter is serious.

In a social media post, Dr. Akmal wrote, “We are not trying to exaggerate, Minister, but this is a major issue! We don’t stop you from drinking, but you must respect the law and the sensitivities of Malaysians. Your eateries have sold alcohol for years, and we never objected. But when you use government agencies and official programs—where providing alcohol is legally prohibited—and violate that, that is what angers the people.”

He added, “It’s simple. If you still don’t understand, you and Tiong should resign. This is blatant irresponsibility.”

Dr. Akmal’s remarks highlight growing concerns among Malaysians who believe that government-linked programs should strictly follow legal and cultural guidelines, especially regarding alcohol consumption.

The debate underscores a wider tension between Malaysia’s efforts to promote itself as a global tourism destination and the need to respect local laws and religious sensitivities, particularly as Visit Malaysia Year 2026 approaches.

Public reactions online are divided, with some defending Minister Nga’s explanation that the event was primarily private-sector-led, while others support Dr. Akmal’s call for accountability in government-linked programs.
