Netizens Slam Akmal For “Forgetting The Flag” After Calling For Tiong’s Resignation

Date:

A new political storm has erupted after UMNO Youth Chief Akmal Saleh demanded the resignation of Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing over the ongoing alcohol controversy. However, the call has backfired, as netizens swiftly reminded Akmal of his own past blunders — particularly the infamous moment when he held the Malaysian flag upside down during a public event.

Critics say Akmal’s action was more than just a “small mistake.” As the leader of UMNO Youth, he represents the younger generation of the party — a symbol of its future direction and values. Yet, the image of him holding the national flag incorrectly has been described as “embarrassing” and “disrespectful,” sparking questions about his sense of patriotism and leadership.

“One who truly respects the nation would never be careless before its flag; a responsible leader would never treat a national symbol as a prop,” one social media user commented.

Observers argue that while the public can forgive a brief lapse in judgment, arrogance and denial are harder to overlook. If Akmal were to admit his mistake and apologize sincerely, many believe Malaysians could move on. But continuing to deflect or justify such acts, they say, shows a deeper problem — a lack of humility and respect for the position he holds.

As one viral post summed it up: “This isn’t about punishment — it’s about accountability. When a leader who once disrespected the flag lectures others about integrity, what the people truly lose is faith in leadership itself.”
