Teen Suspended for Wearing Clear Plastic Ear Retainers—Mom Calls It “Illogical Punishment”

Date:

In Barnsley, South Yorkshire, a 13-year-old student, Izobella Dawson, was suspended for four days after being deemed in violation of her school’s no-jewelry policy—even though she had switched to wearing clear plastic ear retainers to comply with the rules. Her mother, Rachel Dawson, slammed the school’s decision as illogical, arguing that her daughter was being punished for trying to follow the rules.

According to Mirror UK, Izobella wore transparent plastic retainers to prevent her pierced ears from closing while adhering to the ban on accessories. However, the school still considered this a breach of policy. When Izobella refused to remove the retainers or enter an isolation classroom, her suspension was enforced. Initially set for two days, the suspension was extended by another two days after she continued to resist compliance.

Rachel said her daughter had never faced such issues in her two years at the school, noting that teachers had never flagged this as a problem before. She emphasized that the retainers were purely functional, not decorative.

The school defended its decision, stating that the suspension was not due to “wearing earrings” but rather “refusal to follow reasonable instructions.” Officials stressed that uniform rules are clear and necessary to maintain order and a productive learning environment. Rachel has formally lodged a complaint with the education authority and expects a response within 10 days.
