Avatar fans, get ready—one of the original creators just teased some exciting news about the upcoming feature film, The Legend of Aang! Set several years after the events of the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series, the movie will follow Aang and the main crew as young adults, though plot details are still under wraps.
Speaking at a 20th anniversary panel at New York Comic Con on October 12, Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender, praised the team behind the film, calling them “absolutely incredible” and working “so hard right now.” He described the project as “incredibly beautiful,” though he couldn’t reveal any plot details yet.
“Believe me, I tried. I was told no. But I really can’t wait for you to see this,” Konietzko said.
A key highlight: the film is directed by Avatar veteran Lauren Montgomery, who previously served as supervising producer on The Legend of Korra. Konietzko’s shout-out signals that Montgomery’s experience with the Avatar universe is a major asset to the film—something the live-action Netflix adaptation lacked, as the original creators were not involved in a showrunning capacity.
With The Legend of Aang set for release on October 9, 2026, fans can expect a fresh take that stays true to the original spirit of the series. If Konietzko’s enthusiasm is any indication, this feature film could finally deliver the magic long-time Avatar fans have been waiting for.
