The proposal to display signboards in multiple languages across the country to assist foreign tourists is deemed unnecessary.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim explained that existing facilities are already sufficient without the need to add languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Tamil, or Hindi. He stressed that the suggestion is not urgent, as the government has already provided adequate amenities for tourists at key locations like airports.
“No need. If there are many Arab visitors, we’ve already provided facilities at the airports, no need for Arabic signboards. Likewise, for Chinese tourists, we assist with signs at the airports, but there’s no need to use Chinese script. The same goes for Indian visitors, with languages like Tamil, Hindi, and Urdu. So, in my view, it’s unnecessary,” he said during the Ministerial Questions session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Anwar (PH-Tambun) was responding to a supplementary question from Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (PH-Tebrau), who suggested the government consider adding multilingual notices or signboards to make Malaysia more tourist-friendly.
