Dry Mouth Could Be More Serious Than You Think

Many people think a dry mouth means you have “excess heat” in your body. But Dr. Liu Bo-ren says that’s not always the case. Common reasons for dry mouth include not drinking enough water, being in a dry environment, breathing through your mouth, or side effects from medications. However, if it comes with dry, gritty eyes or stiff joints, it could be Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease that reduces gland secretion. Other possible causes include diabetes, thyroid problems, stress, or anxiety.

On his Facebook page, “Dr. Liu Bo-ren – Functional Nutrition Medicine Expert”, Dr. Liu shared that many patients have recently asked whether extreme thirst means their “internal heat” is high. He explains that while heat or hot weather can play a role, dry mouth may also be an early warning from your body.

Here are three common reasons your mouth might feel dry:

  1. Not enough water or a dry environment – Long hours in air-conditioned rooms, talking a lot, or drinking too little water can reduce saliva. The fix? Drink more water, eat water-rich fruits and vegetables, and limit coffee or alcohol.
  2. Mouth breathing – If you have nasal congestion, snore, or suffer from allergies, breathing through your mouth while sleeping can leave your throat and mouth dry in the morning.
  3. Medication side effects – Some blood pressure medications, antidepressants, antihistamines, or painkillers can reduce saliva. If this happens, talk to your doctor about adjusting your medication.

Dr. Liu warns that if dry mouth comes with eye irritation, joint stiffness, or fatigue, you should consider Sjögren’s syndrome. This autoimmune disease attacks salivary and tear glands, reducing their function. Blood tests for ANA and anti-SSA/SSB antibodies can confirm the diagnosis.

Other conditions, like diabetes, thyroid problems, chronic stress, or anxiety, may also contribute to dry mouth.

Tips to ease dry mouth:

  • Drink enough water every day (body weight in kg × 30 ml).
  • Supplement with Omega-3 and B vitamins to support glands and mucous membranes.
  • Avoid irritants like spicy, salty, sugary foods, alcohol, and caffeine.
  • Prioritize good sleep and stress management to balance your nervous system.

Dr. Liu emphasizes: dry mouth isn’t always harmless. It can be an early sign of immune, endocrine, or metabolic issues. If your mouth stays dry for over three weeks—or comes with dry eyes, joint pain, or fatigue—don’t just drink more water. See a doctor to find out the real cause.
