A 25-year-old factory worker was sentenced to six years in prison by the Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to attacking a police officer with a meat cleaver last Sunday.
The sentence was handed down by Judge Nurul Mardhiah Mohammed Redza after the accused, Mohamad Hailmie Idris, admitted to the charge read out to him by the court interpreter. Hailmie, who is unmarried, also admitted to all the facts presented by the prosecution.
According to the charge, Hailmie attacked a police corporal by swinging a meat cleaver, chasing him, and striking the front windshield of the officer’s car. At the time of the incident, the officer was seated in the driver’s seat with the window open, and Hailmie’s actions were deemed potentially fatal.
The incident occurred around 6:05 p.m. on October 12 at Jalan Bakti 1, Bestari Jaya. Hailmie was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a possible fine upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Zaki Mohd Zahid urged the court to impose a fitting sentence, noting that the accused’s actions could have endangered public safety.
Defense counsel R. Sellamal from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) appealed for leniency, explaining that Hailmie supports his father and a disabled younger sibling. “The accused earns an unstable income from factory work, deeply regrets his actions, and seeks the lightest possible sentence,” the lawyer told the court.
According to Sinar Harian, the man had gone on a rampage wielding a meat cleaver in Taman Jasa Ijok on October 13. Police successfully subdued and arrested him, and no injuries were reported.
