Many people wake up in the middle of the night with leg aches or cramps, assuming it’s due to walking too much, exercising, or simply aging. They might take a painkiller or apply heat and move on. But doctors warn that some seemingly minor leg discomfort could be a hidden warning sign of a far more serious health issue.
According to foreign media reports, a man in his 60s, Mr. Liu, who had always been healthy and did not smoke, began experiencing chest pain and left leg discomfort six months ago. Thinking it was just age-related or occasional muscle cramps, he ignored it. However, the pain worsened, affecting his sleep and appetite. Medical examinations revealed the shocking truth: Mr. Liu was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer, with metastasis to his bones.
Doctors note that cases like Mr. Liu’s are not uncommon. Early lung cancer symptoms don’t always originate from the lungs; sometimes they first appear as leg discomfort. People should be alert if they notice the following three abnormal leg signs after ruling out typical bone or joint issues, and consider a lung CT scan:
1. Persistent Leg Pain, Worse at Night
Leg pain is often an early but overlooked symptom. When lung cancer spreads through the bloodstream to bones, it can damage bone structure and irritate nerve endings, causing pain. Initially mild, this pain is often mistaken for muscle fatigue or joint stiffness, but it can intensify and appear even at rest, typically worsening at night and disrupting sleep. Unlike ordinary cramps, cancer-related bone pain is difficult to relieve with massage or standard painkillers and may radiate to the opposite hip, thigh, or calf.
2. Abnormal Skin Changes on the Legs
Few people realize that skin changes can indicate lung cancer. Some patients develop paraneoplastic syndromes, where substances secreted by cancer cells disturb hormones and metabolism, affecting the skin. Abnormal signs may include thickening, darkening, hard nodules, callus-like patches, redness around knees or ankles, or in severe cases, acanthosis nigricans—dark, wrinkled, oily skin, often on the ankles or soles. These changes are usually painless but reflect active cancer cells in the body.
3. Unusual Swelling or Edema
Leg swelling is often associated with heart or kidney problems, but lung cancer can also cause it. As lung tumors grow, they may compress the inferior vena cava, the large vein carrying blood from the lower body to the heart, impairing circulation and causing fluid buildup in the legs, particularly the calves and ankles. Metastasis to the lymphatic system may further block fluid drainage. Cancer-related leg edema is often asymmetric, persistent, and may come with heaviness, tightness, numbness, or a burning sensation.
Doctors emphasize that unexplained, persistent leg discomfort—especially when combined with night pain, skin changes, or swelling—should never be ignored. Early detection can make a critical difference in treatment outcomes.
