A fatal traffic accident occurred on October 18 in Xizhi District, New Taipei City, when an 81-year-old woman surnamed Lin was struck and killed while crossing the road. The driver, a 36-year-old man surnamed Bin, fled the scene without stopping to check on the victim or calling the authorities. He was later apprehended by police in Keelung on October 19 and has been formally charged.
Reports indicate that Bin, who works at a local car dealership, was driving his employer’s vehicle along Zhongxing Road and Fude 1st Road when he hit Lin. It appears he did not notice her crossing the street, causing her to be thrown approximately 10 meters and suffer severe trauma upon impact. Emergency responders found Lin with multiple fractures and no signs of life; she was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead.
Xizhi police reviewed surveillance footage to identify the vehicle and trace the driver’s escape route. Investigators discovered that Bin abandoned the car and was picked up by others, fleeing to a friend’s residence in Keelung. Police tracked his whereabouts and arrested him on the evening of October 19.
After his arrest, Bin claimed he fled the scene out of nervousness. He has been transferred to the Shilin District Prosecutor’s Office on suspicion of hit-and-run and negligent homicide. Following questioning on October 20, prosecutors deemed him a flight risk and requested pretrial detention, which the court granted later that evening.
