A Chinese woman is having the worst “spring cleaning” of her life after accidentally selling her late grandmother’s hidden gold jewelry while sorting through old clothes—worth a staggering ¥130,000 (about RM85,000).
According to reports from Jiangxi, a university student, referred to as Xiao Li, revealed that on October 9, while tidying up old clothes at home, she unknowingly sold a gold bracelet, a necklace, and three rings that had been carefully hidden by her grandmother. The total weight exceeded 100 grams, and with the recent surge in gold prices, their value is estimated at ¥130,000 (around RM85,000).
Xiao Li explained that because the clothes were thick, she didn’t notice the gold hidden inside. Her grandmother usually kept valuables in a safe, so she never expected them to be stored in clothing. The grandmother was devastated upon realizing the gold was gone, and Xiao Li says she feels extreme guilt over the incident.
The recycling station that processed the clothes confirmed it was a small facility with no surveillance cameras. The workers, mostly temporary staff, had already sorted the seven tons of donated clothing on October 15 and sent them to factories across the country. The staff didn’t notice any gold inside the garments, and now it’s unclear where the jewelry ended up.
The recycling station promised to help inquire with the factories, but with so many clothes already dispersed nationwide, finding the hidden gold is proving nearly impossible.
