Speaker Rejects Debate on Teen Girl Stabbing in Dewan Rakyat

Date:

The Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, has rejected a motion by Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar) to debate the recent stabbing death of a 16-year-old female student by a schoolmate in Bandar Utama.

The rejection was officially communicated to Zhemin today. Johari explained that the motion was declined because the Education Minister had already addressed the matter on October 16.

“Therefore, in accordance with Meeting Rule 18(7)(b), I am rejecting the Honorable Member’s motion in the chamber,” he stated in the Dewan Rakyat.

On October 15, Zhemin submitted the motion due to growing concerns over student safety in schools. He cited an open admission by the Education Director-General, Dr. Mohd Azam Ahmad, as evidence of systemic failures in managing student discipline and school safety.

Zhemin argued that the statement highlighted weaknesses in complaint mechanisms, monitoring, and follow-up actions, as well as inconsistent responses from schools and the ministry. He added that these shortcomings hinder reporting, prevent victims from receiving help, and allow perpetrators to remain unpunished, increasing the risk of repeated offenses.
