A 53-year-old teacher at a public school in Brazil’s Federal District was violently attacked by a student’s father after asking students to put away their phones and copy notes from the blackboard. Surveillance footage captured the shocking incident, showing Thiago Lênin Sousa striking the teacher in the head nine times, despite the teacher’s daughter trying to intervene. The attack left the teacher with bruising on his eyes and back, prompting him to say, “I am not physically able to return to the classroom. I am very disappointed.”
The incident occurred Monday morning at the Centro Educacional 4 in Guará. According to the teacher, the student likely called her father after being asked to stop using a phone in class. Sousa reportedly arrived at the school angrily seeking an explanation and assaulted the teacher in a coordination room, ignoring attempts by staff to intervene.
Witnesses included three students and the attacker’s own daughter, who tried to stop the assault. The teacher, a long-time educator, described the attack as deeply distressing, stating that although he has faced many disputes in his career, he had never experienced violence of this magnitude.
Sousa was taken into police custody, filed a report acknowledging that he confronted the teacher, and faces charges including bodily harm, insult, and contempt of court. The Federal District Education Department condemned the violence and confirmed that an investigation is underway, while additional security measures have been deployed at the school to protect students in the coming days.
