Man Jailed in Singapore for Molesting Woman at Marina Bay Sands Lift

Date:

A Chinese man, Hu Guisheng, was sentenced to six days in jail by a Singapore court after pleading guilty to one charge of outrage of modesty. The incident occurred inside a lift at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) when Hu smacked a woman’s buttocks.

According to reports, Hu had left club Ce La Vi on the 57th floor of MBS around 1:34 a.m. on March 8 after drinks with friends. CCTV footage showed the victim entering the lift with Hu, who was holding his wife’s hand. When the lift reached the first floor, the victim held the door for Hu and his wife to exit first.

After they left, Hu reportedly stood next to the woman, stole a glance at her buttocks, and smacked it. The victim immediately tried to stop him and alerted a security guard. Hu was arrested at 2:50 a.m. and released on bail around 2 p.m. the same day.

In court, the prosecution recommended a jail term of one to three weeks, describing Hu’s act as “more intrusive” than touching other body parts. Hu’s lawyer, Peter Ong, requested a fine instead, claiming his client was remorseful and had offered S$5,000 in compensation and a public apology, which the victim rejected. Ong also argued that the incident had severely affected Hu’s business.

District Judge Janet Wang rejected the defense, ruling that Hu’s financial losses were self-inflicted and noting that the act involved a degree of sexual exploitation. She highlighted that Hu waited for others to leave the lift before committing the offense, and that the touch was deliberate, not fleeting.

The court ultimately sentenced Hu to six days’ imprisonment.
