A bizarre robbery in Shanghai has gone viral after a man calmly walked into a gold jewelry shop armed with a hammer — and started looting gold in front of stunned onlookers. Instead of panicking or fleeing, the man appeared unusually relaxed, moving slowly as he smashed display cases. His strange composure drew a growing crowd, with several bystanders even pulling out their phones to film and livestream the incident.
When police arrived, the suspect reportedly remained calm and made no attempt to resist arrest. Witnesses speculated that he might have intended to get caught, joking that “he probably just wanted to go to jail.”
According to witnesses, the man showed no aggression toward anyone despite being surrounded. In fact, some suggested the robbery might have been premeditated precisely so he could be detained by police.
A store employee told local media, “The police handled it quickly. None of the staff were hurt, and all the gold was recovered.”
Authorities have since detained the suspect, but his motive remains unclear. Shanghai police are continuing their investigation to determine why he carried out the oddly calm robbery.
