In Azerbaijan, a country located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, a tragic incident has shocked the nation after a 19-year-old bride reportedly took her own life just days after her wedding. The young bride, Lyaman Mammadli, faced harsh criticism from her husband’s relatives for wearing an off-shoulder wedding dress, which they called “shameful,” “like she wasn’t wearing anything,” and “too revealing.”
According to international media reports, Lyaman’s father, Murad Bayramov, said that on her wedding day to 33-year-old Elnur, she wore an off-shoulder gown. After the ceremony, Elnur’s family reportedly went to their home, shouting and berating them for allowing Lyaman to wear such a “shameful and revealing” dress.
Murad stated that he tried to defend his daughter, telling them, “It’s just a normal wedding dress, the kind many brides wear,” but his in-laws refused to back down and continued arguing, remaining angry even the next day.
“In her pain and emotional distress, she ended her own life,” Murad said. He added that although the husband and his family attended the funeral, he did not allow them to stay and sent them away immediately. Authorities are currently investigating Lyaman’s death and whether the actions of her in-laws played a role.
Reports note that Azerbaijan is a predominantly Muslim country, where many believe women should cover their bodies in public except for the face, hands, and feet. However, no details about Lyaman or her family’s personal religious beliefs have been confirmed.
