33 Riders Arrested After Turning Against Traffic On Penang Second Bridge

Date:

A total of 33 motorcyclists, including a foreign national, were arrested during a traffic enforcement operation by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) at KM 3.8 of the Penang Second Bridge heading toward Batu Kawan early yesterday morning.

Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Chief, Superintendent Jay January Siowou, said all the men were found riding their motorcycles in the car lane when officers conducted the operation.

He said the riders were instructed to stop as their actions were illegal. However, instead of complying, they turned around and rode against the flow of traffic toward Batu Maung.

“This action was extremely dangerous, not only to themselves but also to other road users,” he said in a statement last night.

Thanks to swift action by the operation team, 33 men aged between 16 and 27 — comprising 32 locals and one foreigner — were arrested for further investigation.

During the operation, police also seized 51 motorcycles under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. A total of 110 motorcycles were inspected and 74 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.

JSPT Bukit Aman, JSPT Penang, and PLUS Malaysia Berhad also conducted a joint northern-zone motorcycle operation in the Seberang Perai Tengah district.

Superintendent Jay January emphasized that police will continue intensifying operations to curb illegal street racing in identified hotspot areas and urged road users to refrain from taking part in any dangerous or unlawful racing activities.
