While many may shy away from working as a garbage collector, 23-year-old Wan Othman Mohd Nur Hasyim takes pride in the job he has been doing for the past four years to help support his family.
Speaking to Harian Metro, Wan Othman said family responsibility was the main reason he chose to take up a job that is often looked down upon by some members of society.
He explained that his work routine begins at 9.30pm and continues until 6am, as he works the night shift collecting rubbish in the area.
Wan Othman said his father earns a living by cutting grass and cleaning drains, while his mother is not employed. However, the family’s income remains limited, particularly as three of his younger siblings are still attending school.
Because of this, he decided to step in and contribute financially by working as a garbage collector.

‘I’m Not Ashamed Of My Job’
When asked whether he ever felt embarrassed about his occupation, Wan Othman said he has never felt ashamed of the work he does.
“I don’t feel embarrassed because I am determined to work and earn money to help my family,” he said.
He added that people who look down on the job should instead reflect on their own behaviour, particularly when they fail to dispose of rubbish responsibly.
“For those who look down on this job, I think it is worse when they themselves do not know how to throw rubbish properly,” he said.
Public Behaviour Creates Challenges
Wan Othman also shared some of the challenges he faces while carrying out his duties.
Among the common issues are members of the public who throw rubbish into bins without tying their garbage bags, causing waste to spill out and making the collection process slower and more difficult.
He added that vehicles parked too close to rubbish bins — especially behind shop premises — can also obstruct access for garbage collectors trying to complete their rounds.
Working Two Jobs While Planning For The Future
Aside from working the night shift as a garbage collector, Wan Othman also takes on a part-time job at a food stall during the day.
Looking ahead, he said he is currently in the process of obtaining a lorry driving licence, with hopes of eventually working as a lorry driver to improve his career prospects.
His determination highlights the reality faced by many young Malaysians who take on demanding jobs to support their families while striving for better opportunities in the future.
