Woman Alarmed After Cooked Prawns Turn Blue Following Hema Online Purchase

Date:

A Chinese consumer was left shocked after prawns she purchased online from supermarket chain Hema turned blue after being cooked and reheated, raising concerns over food safety.

According to Modern Express, a Shanghai woman surnamed Wang bought a pack of tiger prawns, also known as flower prawns, from Hema on January 20, paying more than 40 yuan (about RM23). After cooking the prawns and storing them in the refrigerator, she later reheated them and noticed that one prawn had released a blue liquid, with most of its flesh turning blue.

Disturbed by the unusual colour change, Wang said she was afraid to eat the prawns and immediately contacted Hema’s customer service for an explanation.

In response, Hema stated that the blue discolouration could be linked to various environmental factors, such as the prawns’ farming conditions, and insisted that the change did not affect their edibility.

Hema added that the prawns were supplied directly by vendors and that individual stores do not conduct separate testing. While inspection reports were said to be available on the product’s online page, Wang claimed she could not find any related testing information on the product packaging she received.
