Café Stirs Controversy With “Virgin Boy Egg” Infused Americano

Date:

A coffee shop in Dongyang, Zhejiang Province, has sparked a heated debate online after introducing a bold new fusion drink: the “Virgin Boy Egg Americano.” This unconventional beverage combines Western coffee culture with a contentious local intangible cultural heritage—eggs boiled in the urine of young boys. While some have lauded the creation for its ingenuity, the drink has faced significant backlash regarding hygiene and modern food safety standards.

The proprietor of the establishment, Mr Lu, informed Red Star News that the inspiration for the drink stemmed from a desire to merge East and West. By integrating the traditional Dongyang delicacy with classic Americano coffee, he aimed to provide a unique cultural experience. Mr Lu further explained that the eggs are charcoal-grilled after being boiled in urine to enhance their aroma, adding another layer of complexity to the flavour profile.

Priced at 28 yuan (approximately RM18) per cup, the specialty coffee has reportedly found a niche market, with the shop selling dozens of cups daily and upwards of a hundred during weekends. Addressing concerns regarding the source of the urine, Mr Lu clarified that it is not collected at random. Instead, the shop sources the ingredient from a trusted acquaintance’s household to ensure a controlled preparation process for the eggs.

However, medical professionals have expressed skepticism regarding the health benefits and cleanliness of the practice. Huang Jian, Director of Nephrology at Jinhua Central Hospital, noted that urine is a waste product containing little to no beneficial substances for the human body. Similarly, Jia Suqing, a senior practitioner at the Jinhua Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, remarked that while “virgin boy urine” was used as a medicinal booster in ancient times, it falls short of contemporary sanitary expectations.

The Dongyang City Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Centre confirmed that the “Virgin Boy Egg” is indeed a recognised heritage item with a history spanning centuries. Traditionally, local farmers believed the eggs possessed cooling properties and could strengthen the body during times of hardship. Nevertheless, the centre noted that they do not actively promote the delicacy to outsiders, as it frequently attracts misunderstanding and criticism due to its nature.

Public reaction to this “innovative cuisine” remains deeply divided. Some view the drink as a creative way to promote Dongyang’s unique heritage to a younger generation. Conversely, many netizens have labelled it “dark cuisine,” accusing the café of using shock tactics for social media attention while ignoring basic hygiene. The debate continues to brew as the café maintains its steady sales despite the international scrutiny.
