A Malaysian employee has sparked online debate after sharing an incident in which a boss allegedly mocked a staff member for taking medical leave and obtaining a medical certificate (MC).
The case was posted on social media platform Threads by user @kopiaislimau90 on April 1, where the employer reportedly expressed frustration after an employee took four consecutive days of sick leave due to illness.
According to the post, the employee initially received two days of medical leave but later returned to the clinic after suffering a high fever, resulting in a doctor issuing an additional two days of MC for recovery. Despite this, the employer allegedly sent a message questioning the situation.
A screenshot shared online showed a remark stating: “Can’t wake up to work, but can wake up to get MC,” which drew criticism from netizens who described the comment as insensitive and lacking empathy.
The original poster expressed frustration over the situation, noting that employees are often asked to provide MCs when unwell, but still face scepticism even after complying with medical requirements.
Online users largely sided with the employee, pointing out that visiting a clinic to obtain a medical certificate typically requires minimal time compared to a full working day, and that medical advice should be respected.
Some also suggested that employers should reconsider rigid attitudes towards sick leave, emphasising the importance of workplace understanding and employee well-being.
