Kuching Baker Creates The King of Kek Lapis Worth RM1,800 For Hari Raya

Date:

A Sarawak layered cake also known as Kek Lapis has taken festive indulgence to a new level this Hari Raya, with one artisanal creation fetching an eye-watering RM1,800—a price that even eclipses the country’s minimum monthly wage.

Dubbed the “Sultan Kek Lapis,” this premium cake is crafted by 38-year-old baker Adhar Brahim of Abg K’ju Cake House in Kuching. Adhar explained that the creation is more than just a cake; it is a showcase of aesthetic expression and meticulous craftsmanship, designed to elevate the traditional layered cake into a work of art.

To achieve “Sultan-level” quality, Adhar selects only the finest ingredients, including Wijsman top-tier butter, imported dried fruits, and carefully chosen nuts. He describes the process as an art form, balancing texture, flavour, and visual appeal.

The cake is the product of patience and expertise. From mixing the batter to carefully layering and baking, the entire process can take over eight hours. Even slight deviations in temperature or baking time can affect the texture and taste, making precision essential at every stage.

Weighing over 5kg, the Sultan Kek Lapis is available in limited quantities—200 cakes in total. While the full cake sells for RM1,800, the bakery also offers smaller portions starting from RM160, with single slices priced at RM9.50 for those who want a taste.

Adhar remains unfazed by claims of “overpricing,” noting that true connoisseurs understand the value of craftsmanship and quality ingredients. The cake targets buyers who appreciate exquisite taste and artisanal dedication, making it a festive indulgence for the discerning palate.
