Kuching has been named one of the world’s top retirement destinations, ranking 13th globally and placing among the top five in Asia, according to Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
The recognition was awarded by International Living, an international lifestyle publication that evaluates retirement locations based on factors such as cost of living, quality of life and access to healthcare.
Wee said the ranking has drawn growing interest from abroad, particularly from Singapore, with more people enquiring about the Sarawak Malaysia My Second Home (S-MM2H) programme.
“This recognition reaffirms that Kuching is not only comfortable to live in, but is also trusted internationally as a stable, safe and truly liveable city,” he said in his welcoming address at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Annual Dinner 2025 on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Wee said MBKS recorded a year of notable achievements in 2025, earning recognition at international, national and state levels for its efforts in sustainability, inclusivity and community development.
At the national level, MBKS received two Special Mention Awards at the PLANMalaysia and Malaysian Institute of Planners MyPLACE Awards 2025 for projects at Kuching Park and the rejuvenation of Kenyalang Park. Wee said both initiatives have helped create meaningful public spaces and strengthen community identity.
In another milestone, MBKS became the first local council in Borneo to be recognised by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) as a Candidate City under the Child Friendly Cities Initiative.
“This marks a major step towards building a city where every child feels safe, protected and supported,” Wee said.
He added that the achievements were made possible through teamwork across departments, the dedication of staff, and the support of councillors and the management team. According to Wee, MBKS’s work not only advances city development but also contributes to Sarawak’s broader nation-building efforts.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who officiated the event, praised MBKS for its leadership among Sarawak’s local authorities.
“With its achievements, MBKS has become a reference point for other local authorities, who observe your every move,” he said, while encouraging continued excellence and commitment.
Looking ahead, Wee said MBKS will focus on enhancing municipal services, expanding smart city initiatives, strengthening inclusivity programmes and investing in staff development to raise standards further in the coming years.
The annual dinner also honoured 16 retired MBKS employees in appreciation of their service and contributions to the city and the state.
