While most Malaysians were busy wishing each other a Happy New Year, a special group had something else to celebrate first—their birthday.
A viral post on Threads showed a Malaysian joking about how for those born on January 1, New Year’s Day comes second to their birthday. “Happy New Year? Nah, happy birthday to me,” the user wrote, sharing a close-up of their MyKad showing the date 010101.
The post struck a chord with other January 1 babies, who flooded the replies with photos of their own ICs, some featuring patterns like 010101 or 020202. Commenters playfully referred to their “batch numbers,” turning the thread into an unofficial support group.
Many joked that birthday wishes should come before New Year celebrations, while others said the fireworks felt extra special when they could pretend they were for them. Some even called it a small life lottery—cake, countdowns, and long weekends all rolled into one.
