Man Fined RM1,400 After Entering Enclosure Of Viral Baby Hippo Moo Deng

Date:

A Thai court has fined a man 10,000 baht (approximately RM1,400 / US$300) after he unlawfully entered the enclosure of Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus calf that has become an international internet sensation, according to the zoo director.

Moo Deng, whose name means “bouncy pork” in Thai, rose to global fame through viral social media clips showcasing her playful behaviour, drawing huge crowds and significantly boosting visitor numbers at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, located about two hours from Bangkok.

The incident took place last month when the man entered the enclosure that houses Moo Deng and her mother, with footage later showing him inside the pen recording the animal using a tablet device.

Zoo officials said Moo Deng was not injured but was left “slightly startled” by the intrusion, prompting the zoo to pursue legal action against the individual.

On Wednesday, zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy confirmed that prosecutors had informed the zoo the man was found guilty after admitting to the offence, resulting in the fine imposed by a local court.

Authorities were unable to immediately provide further court details when contacted by AFP.

Narongwit stressed that the ruling sends a strong message that animal enclosures are protected spaces and violations would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

He added that since the incident, no further breaches have been reported, with the zoo increasing patrols and tightening security measures to prevent similar cases.

Staff training has also been expanded to include response protocols for potential intrusions, alongside existing procedures for handling animal emergencies.

Moo Deng, who turned one in July, continues to be a major attraction, with her popularity driving merchandise sales, memes, and sustained international attention online.
